10 Funny Picture Books

If your kids are anything like mine, they love to laugh! We’re always on the hunt for new silly picture books to entertain us. There are some that I find funny, some that she finds funny, but the real winners are the books that have us both cracking up. Here are a few of our favorite funny picture books!

This Is Not My Hat (Jon Klassen)

All of Jon Klassen’s picture books are funny, but this one made us laugh the hardest! A little fish shows up at the beginning of the book, showing off the hat he’s wearing. It’s not really his hat, but it looks better on him than the guy that he took it from. And the other guy probably won’t even notice, right?

Children Make Terrible Pets (Peter Brown)

Lucy loves pets! She’s wanted one for so long! So when she stumbles across a boy in the woods (whom she dubs Squeaker), she begs her mother to let her keep him. Her mother warns her that children make terrible pets, but will Lucy listen?

Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing

From the same authors who brought us Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs comes this hilarious book. Much like the cover, it’s a lot of pictures of animals in clothing with reminders of why they should DEFINITELY NOT wear clothing. As hilarious as this book was, it didn’t seem to prevent my daughter from putting clothes on her pets …

Betty Bunny Loves Chocolate Cake

Betty Bunny has never had chocolate cake before. So she is hesitant to try it when her mother makes it for dessert one day. After one bite, Betty’s world is changed and she declares that she loves chocolate cake so much, she’s going to marry it!

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs

I could have included all of Mo Willem’s books in this list, but in the spirit of diversity, I’m only including my absolute favorite. It’s not one of his most popular books, but I think it’s his best! In this retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Willems replaces the bears with a Mama Dinosaur, a Papa Dinosaur and a dinosaur who’s an exchange student from Norway. The wit and play on words in this book makes it one of my all time favorite children books. Kids laugh hysterically, but I guarantee you’ll be laughing even harder.

Wordy Birdy

Wordy Birdy doesn’t know when to stop talking or how to be quiet. She loves to talk … but she’s not so good at listening, even when she should. This book is not only funny, but also shows how important it is to listen to others instead of dominating the conversation. We also love the sequel, Wordy Birdy Meets Mr Cougarpants.

BE QUIET!

Ryan Higgins is another children’s author who I absolutely love (you may have heard of his Mother Bruce books … if not, I recommend those too!). In this book, Rupert the Mouse is excitedly preparing for his wordless book. The peacefulness! The lovely scenery! It’s going to be amazing! But when his chatty friends show up, this book ends up a little differently than he had imagined.

The Bear Who Wasn’t There

This book is a newer find for us. We spend the book looking for the bear within its pages. Where is he? Surely he’ll show up soon. It’s hilarious and breaks the 4th wall throughout.

Dragon Was Terrible

The kingdom has a dragon problem. This dragon is terrible! He scribbles in books! He stomps on flowers! He steals candy from baby unicorns! Despite all the knights the king has dispatched to solve the dragon problem, Dragon hasn’t been defeated. Will the kingdom be able to find a way to get rid of him at last?

Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise

In the sequel to Interrupting Chicken, little red chicken can’t wait to tell her dad all about school! Her teacher taught her about the elephant of surprise. Every good book has an elephant of surprise! Despite her father trying to correct her, the little red chicken won’t be convinced otherwise and sets out to find the elephant of surprise in all her favorite books.
